Oceans Achievers

Most of us join a health club with a goal in mind, losing a bit of weight, maintaining fitness or sometimes something more specific such as fitting into that dress for a special occasion or for a particular health reason. Over the past few years we have helped countless members achieve their goals, here are just a couple of their stories:

I had a heart attack in December 2000 and had coronary artery by-pass surgery in 2001. I took the heart attack as a warning and a real ‘wake up’ call, I was overweight, stressed with work and didn’t get much time to exercise so it was obvious things needed to change. I joined Oceans shortly after the surgery and although I was nervous, the instructors were very helpful and supportive.

I have now completely turned my life around, I exercise regularly, I’ve lost over 5 stone in weight and my blood pressure and heart rate are better than they have been for years. I would recommend Oceans and their instructors to anyone who is thinking of getting into better shape for whatever reason.

I first noticed Ocean’s when it was located on St. Catherine’s Road before it moved to its present site on Dysart Road. It always intrigued me about what went on inside. This was about the same time that my husband was taken ill and my doctor sensing that I might have a job looking after him suggested that I ought to look after myself too. So off I went and joined Oceans.

I was worn out after the first session, but I was driven to do it. My husband spurred me on, I worked through my misgivings and quite soon began to feel the benefits. I enjoy other activities too, like indoor bowls. But of all the activities that I do get up to, it’s my time at Oceans that I enjoy the most.

The people here are so nice, I get looked after by the girls on reception. I make friends with all the other members. Even the trainers who keep me going are fantastic. My activities include the rowing machine, which I work on for ten minutes, then, for a quarter of an hour I stride along on the treadmill. Then I get to my favourite bit, the indoor cycling which I do for up to an hour, it’s fantastic!

I just feel so good after I’ve done my training session and my doctor tells me it’s the best thing I could ever have done, much better than a load of pills, and it’s not expensive either.

I joined Oceans in January 2008 as part of my New Years resolution to get fitter and lose some weight. I had just tried running outdoors but my poor legs were unable to cope with the stress it put on them because of my weight. At that time I was 18 stone 9 pounds.

I got into a regular routine of exercising and in 7 months I managed to lose almost 6 stone and my fitness level has improved greatly. My achievements have even resulted in my story being covered in Mens Health magazine.
